The Reality of Sailing
Richard Hunter
The classic advert: a yacht sailing gently on an azure sea with not a cloud in
the sky, a bikini-clad lady lying on the deck and the
crew in their smartly pressed shorts and starched
shirts. No-one with a care in the world.
Now, what9s the reality?
First, getting to the boat: on our recent trip,
checking in at the airport wearing 5 layers of
clothes; books stuffed into pockets; an anchor
chain for the dinghy around Brigitte9s neck
(8fashion jewellery9); the small bag with 810kgs
maximum allowance,9 being so heavy it can hardly
be lifted into the overhead locker; the other bag
containing a damaged toilet seat (upsetting the
customs man on arrival when he opened it
without rubber gloves); a rudder stock; a water
pump; shackles; and various engine parts and
other bits and pieces all weighing in total 15 of the
23 kilos allowed. So only 8 kilos left for clothes: 10
swimming trunks, 10 shirts and 2 pairs of flip-flops for the 3 months sailing
in the Caribbean; it9s very informal.
