COME A-WASSAILING
13 September, 7pm, Deanery Orchard, Deanery Road
New Crockham Hill Tradition for all the family
Please join us to help Wassail our Deanery Orchard fruit trees on Saturday
13 September. Led by our Wassail Masters, Alan Jowett and Ashley
Netherclift, with Jane Werry and her Crockham Hill Ukulele band.
This is a new Crockham Hill tradition which was started last year and it has
proved to be enormous fun for all ages! There will be delicious hot cooked
food, mulled cider and apple juice, followed by apple cake to cheer us along
as we carry out the age-old ceremony of Wassailing.
Suggested donations are £10 per adult (children go free), payable by cash
on arrival. For catering purposes, please could you let June know expected
numbers in advance on 866350 or at redlandsbarn@gmail.com
Wassailing is an ancient English custom of visiting orchards in cider
producing regions, such as Kent and Sussex, to promote a good harvest for
the coming year. The trees are awoken with songs and loud noise to scare
away the evil spirits. It usually takes place in January, but Crockham Hill will
Wassail Deanery Orchard in September when the weather is likely to be
milder!
¥ Wear warm, colourful clothing (and fun hats if wished) and sturdy
footwear
¥ Take torches (although there will lighting and a firepit)
¥ Bring rattles, saucepan lids and spoons etc., to make a noise to ward
off the evil spirits
